AnnotationThere is an increasing need for the patient's voice to be heard, and this paper introduces the "Council of Elders" who act as patients' representatives in the US. Using the first meeting of the Council as an exemplar, the authors describe and discuss the special nature of such meetings, and the preparations required to build a relationship between different participants. The project has proved worthwhile in tackling ageism: decisions have been made with the patient, rather than for the patient. (RH).
