Pages | pp 47-52 |

Annotation | This article is adapted from a paper given by the author at an expert group meeting convened by the Population Division of the United Nations (UN) in New York in November 2000, which considered "policy responses to population ageing and decline" in selected countries. It sets out the demographic prospects for the UK during the next half century, and the possible consequences of the resulting ageing of the population and reduction in the working population. It summarises the impact that these projections have had on UK Government policy. (RH). |
