| Annotation | This was an annual publication containing detailed statistics on the total number of residential care homes (both local authority and independent sector run) and independent nursing homes, showing separately those "dual registered" homes which are registered with both the local authority to provide residential care and with the health authority to provide nursing care. The number of places available within the various types of homes, the number of admissions to them during the year, and the number of residents supported in these homes by local authorities are also detailed. Summary figures of the total number of residents in homes within each sector are also presented. Data covered England as at 31 March and were based on returns submitted to the Department of Health by local authorities (in respect of residential care homes) and health authorities (nursing homes registered under Part 2 of the Registered Homes Act 1984). An annual statistical bulletin continues to summarise this detailed statistical series.
