AnnotationClinical diagnosis of major depression was used as the dependent variable, with four items from the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) to form the GDS-Abbreviated (GDS-A) scale. Endorsing any two these four items - dissatisfied with life, feeling helpless, reporting problems with memory, and lost activities and interest - yielded the best results. The GDS-A's short format and strong discriminating ability makes it an effective, convenient tool for screening visually impaired, older patients for depression. (RH).
