Annotation | An increasing proportion of older people are being admitted to hospital in their last year of life. A decrease in the average length of stay has been accompanied by an increase in the number of admissions. The Western Australian population in this study spent more time in hospital in the last year of life at ages 65-74, but over 85s spent less time in hospital, when compared with results from the Oxford Record Linkage Study. These differences in hospital admission patterns between Western Australia and the Oxford Region can be explained by differences in community and residential care. (RH). |
