Annotation | In their clinical work with veterans enrolled in psychogeriatric clinical study, the authors became intrigued by the range of alcohol histories and undertook a study to understand more about veterans' lifetime experiences with alcohol. The questionnaire in the study included: "the CAGE" (four questions about cutting down drinking, feelings of annoyance by criticism of drinking, guilty feelings about drinking, and early morning drinking); a lifetime drinking graph; and questions about how and why veterans quit drinking. Although most participants were currently abstinent and had quit drinking without participation in a treatment programme, they described a range of drinking histories. The article presents five case studies to illustrate these lifetime patterns, and outlines the clinical challenges for working with older veterans with drinking problems. (RH). |
