AnnotationThe effects of coping and social support on the adaptation to Type II diabetes mellitus of 200 older Hong Kong Chinese patients (age range 60-92) were examined. The duration of illness since its first detection ranged from 6 months to 36 years (mean 9.14 years). Data were collected in face-to-face interviews with a structured questionnaire. Results indicated that patients did not perceive diabetes as severely threatening to their daily activities, nor did they exhibit higher levels of depression as measured by the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), compared to a normal sample of older people. Concealment of feelings was most significantly associated with depressive symptoms. General social support appeared to be more beneficial than diabetic-specific support. Support from friends played a more significant role in the adaptation to diabetes mellitus than support from the family network. (RH).
