AnnotationThe impacts of past international and interregional migration flows on regional older population growth and distribution patterns were examined, using 1960, 1970, 1980 and 1990 US Census data and multi-regional demographic models to analyse change. Older people's past interregional migration patterns have exhibited considerable stability and have contributed less than ageing in place in shaping regional older population geographies. The effects of immigration on dependency ratios have also been very modest. Analysis of possible population rejuvenating effects of immigration suggest that although the impact has contributed to lower older person to worker dependency ratios, its level over the past decades has been insufficient to counteract the much stronger countervailing impact of population ageing.
