The association between age and health literacy among elderly persons | Author(s) | David W Baker, Julie A Gazmararian, Joseph Sudano |
Journal title | Journals of Gerontology: Series B, Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences, vol 55B, no 6, November 2000 |
Pages | pp S368-S374 |
Keywords | Health [elderly] ; Preventative medicine ; Illiterate persons ; Age groups [elderly] ; Living in the community ; United States of America. |
Annotation | Home interviews were conducted with 2774 older Americans, who also completed the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy of Adults (S-TOFHLA) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Mean S-TOFHLA scores declined 1.4 points for every year increase in age. Differences in newspaper reading frequency, visual acuity, chronic medical conditions, and health status did not explain the lower literacy of older participants. Future studies need to examine whether functional literacy declines with age, and whether this is explained by declines in cognitive function. (RH). |
