AnnotationThe Outcome Expectations for Exercise scale (OEE) was developed based on Bandura's theory of self-efficacy: that self-efficacy expectations affect behaviour, motivational level, thought patterns, and emotional reactions in response to any situation. The OEE was tested on 175 residents in a continuing care retirement community. The study provides some initial support for the scale's reliability and validity. Outcome expectations for exercise were related to an older person's exercise behaviour, and the OEE scale can help identify older people with low outcome expectations for exercise. Interventions can then be implemented to help these individuals to strengthen their outcome expectations, which may subsequently improve exercise behaviour. (RH).
