Annotation | Continuous monitoring of wrist activity rhythm has been considered useful for evaluating abnormalities of the sleep-wake rhythm in people with dementia. The authors studied 82 older people with dementia in a nursing home over 7 days using this method. Abnormalities in 47 (57.3%) in the sample were classified into four categories: severely impaired circadian rhythm type with no boundary between day and night; free-running rhythm type; decreased circadian amplitude type; and and accentuation of ultradian rhythm type. This four-category classification provides a scientific approach to studying the mechanism of circadian activity rhythm abnormalities of older people with dementia. (RH). |
