AnnotationImprovement or stability of nutritional status was evaluated for 107 frail older people from their entry (T1) to Bienvivir PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) programme in El Paso, Texas until nine to twelve months (T2) of participation. The Student's t-test was used to ascertain changes over time in nutrition related anthropometric and biochemical data. Most participants had normal serum albumin and total serum cholesterol levels at both time points. Improvement was noted in cholesterol levels for those with defined above or below normal cholesterol categories. Nutritional status parameters of the reviewed participants were quite good at T1, demonstrated by the high serum albumin levels noted; these were only mildly depleted after 9-12 months of participation. Because a programme of all-inclusive care is a unique concept, this research can serve as a model for comparing nutrition related status parameters for other PACE programmes in the US. Comparisons with frail older people being cared for in home settings are also required. Such data could provide information about whether such a concept needs to be promoted to lower health care costs and promote quality of life for this population. (RH).
