AnnotationFamily life has changed rapidly in the last 50 years, a major influence being the growth in the proportion of older people in the population. Research by the authors at the Department of Social Gerontology, University of Keele revisits three areas (Bethnal Green, Wolverhampton and Woodford) which were the subject of three classic studies in the 1940s and 1950s. The book is divided into three parts: background to the research; key empirical findings in relation to family life, neighbouring and social support; and detailed findings. Issues examined include: changes in household composition; changes in geographical proximity of kin and relatives; the extent and type of help provided by the family; contact and relationships with neighbours; relationships with friends; involvement in social and leisure activities; and experiences of minority ethnic groups. The book is based on a research study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of their Research Programme on Population and Household Change. (RH).
