Annotation | 72 old age and general consultant psychiatrists at 20 hospitals in the Midlands and South Yorkshire were sent questionnaires with one of two different case vignettes: an old man complaining of low mood, and a middle-aged man with the same complaint. Both questionnaires included questions on taking a sexual history and management of sexual dysfunction. Consultant psychiatrists (general and old age) take a sexual history much more frequently from middle-aged than from older men. Middle-aged men with sexual dysfunction are referred to a specialised clinic, whilst older men are referred to a community psychiatric nurse. These findings indicate that taking a sexual history is often omitted in the psychiatric assessment of older men, who also do not receive appropriate referral and treatment for sexual dysfunction. Human sexuality and particularly aged sexuality requires more attention in psychiatric training. (RH). |
