AnnotationThe hypothesis is examined that cut-off scores generated by the Hamilton Depression (HAM-D) and the Montgomery and Asberg Rating Scales (MADRS) can identify case level depression. The GMS AGECAT (Automated Geriatric Examination for Computer Assisted Taxonomy) is employed as external validation criterion in determining the rate scale cut-off scores. The sensitivity and specificity of both instruments are examined, and age and gender sub-group analyses conducted. HAM-D cut-off score of 16 and MADRS of 21 were identified as differentiating case from sub-case. These scores provide researchers with externally validated and clinically relevant cut-off scores in designing trials in the management of older depressed community residents. (RH).
