AnnotationIn residential homes, care planning and the response to specific health care needs of residents is of variable quality. This study, based on 17 homes in different areas of England, suggests a link between depression and a poor response by homes to specific physical health problems. Lower levels of depression were more strongly related to the individual staff response to an individual resident's physical needs than to any of the general "home level" care quality indicators examined. A concerted effort to improve physical healthcare might reduce the prevalence of depression in care homes, and thus enhance quality of life. (RH).
