Annotation | The women contributing to this book have academic interests and professional backgrounds in gerontology, social work and counselling, and have some association with the former Department of Applied Social Studies at Keele University, now part of the School of Social Relations. The book is concerned with understanding better the ways in which women construct and reconstruct their identities in middle age and later life, and how this changes. Each chapter takes a critical, feminist, life-course perspective to challenge myths concerning women's traditional roles. Themes examined include: work and the transition to retirement; working carers; the menopause; older women undergraduates; bereavement and widowhood; and long-term marriage and care. The concluding chapter emphasises five themes discussed in previous chapters about policies and practices: they are not gender neutral; their context is subject to change; there should be no stereotypes or myths; ageing women should be given a voice; and focus should be on abilities and associated positive images.
