AnnotationDespite the potential benefits of exercise, very few osteoarthritis patients participate in regular physical activity. T'ai Chi improves health-related fitness necessary for functional mobility and independent living, and so may be an effective and enjoyable alternative. This study examined the effects of T'ai Chi on 33 older Americans (mean age 68) living in the community, diagnosed with lower extremity osteoarthritis, and having no prior training longer than 2 weeks. The participants experienced significant improvements in arthritis self-efficacy, quality of life, and functional mobility. T'ai Chi training is a safe and effective complementary therapy in the medical management of lower extremity osteoarthritis. (RH).
