Keywords | Alternative medicine ; Social surveys ; United States of America. |
Annotation | A nationally representative US survey was analysed to compare, quantify and characterise use of conventional medical services and use of 20 alternative medical therapies by over 65s. Overall, 30% of the over 65s reported using alternative medicine (amounting to 10 million Americans based on extrapolations to census data) and 19% visited an alternative medicine provider (equivalent to 63 million visits) within the previous year. Most commonly used were chiropractic and herbs, both of which may be problematic in older patients. Doctors should be asking all patients about use of alternative medicine. (RH). |
