Annotation | Despite diagnosis by the Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA) investigators, 64% of 252 older people living at home had undetected dementia, defined as never having seen a doctor for memory problems according to an informant's report. These older people may be at significant risk for delirium, road accidents, medication errors, and financial difficulties. As preventive strategies are developed and new cognitive enhancing therapies emerge, guidelines about screening for cognitive impairment in older people need to be re-examined. Caregivers also need to educated about the early signs of dementia. (RH). |
