AnnotationThe Longitudinal Interdisciplinary Study on Aging conducted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology (TMIG) aimed to identify risk factors for patients with geriatric disease or chronic medical conditions, and to search for factors that accelerate of decelerate the ageing process. Subjects were 583 men and women aged 65-89 who were independent in both basic activities of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) at baseline. Having a high level hand-grip strength, good intellectual activities, and good social roles were strongly associated with remaining independence in IADL for non-disabled Japanese over 65s. Not being in the habit of taking a walk was also identified as a significant predictor of functional decline in BADL during the study's 3-year interval. (RH).
