Annotation | The Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) replicates the model of comprehensive, community-based geriatric care pioneered by On Lok. Using data on short-term hospitalisation and participants from PACE's minimum data set, the authors describe use of acute care hospitals during PACE's demonstration phase. Overall, short-term hospital use among PACE participants was low in contrast with that of older and disabled populations. Participant predictors of hospitalisation in PACE were generally consistent with other studies in older clinical and community populations. Critical to maintaining PACE's success is an understanding of the independent impact of the organisation and environment of health care on this management. (RH). |
