AnnotationA collaborative project was conducted at the University of Derby with a group of men and women who defined themselves as being in midlife, and had responded to publicity to join a group in which art-making could be used to increase their level of "self-understanding". This deliberately vague term was adopted so that the participants themselves could progressively define their own needs. Reference is made to their personal stories, with care taken to preserve the individual's own language, in terms of vocabulary and structure. It becomes clear that art-making, play and experimentation, in a dedicated "liminal" space, apart from everyday life, can assist those at midlife to reclaim neglected aspects of self, and to explore and change self-narrative.
