AnnotationNew Labour's vision of lifelong learning, as embodied in the Green Paper "The learning age", is critically reviewed. In particular, its use of the rhetoric of educational access, equity and innovation is contrasted with the Government's view of education as primarily economic policy. The article strongly argues that the Government's vision of "lifelong learning" is nothing of the sort, and suggests that the raft of initiatives launched by New Labour since 1998 are better described by the term "economic education". The whole question is examined with special reference to the way in which older people are marginalised from the very idea of "The Learning Age". It concludes by exploring the shared attitudes and assumptions of authentic lifelong learning and the Third Age approach to education. (RH).
