AnnotationDrawing on a set of 210 qualitative interviews conducted in six European countries (Greece, Sweden, Italy, Portugal, the UK and Ireland), this article explores the dynamics of international retirement migration (IRM) in relation to European Union (EU) nationals within Europe. The extent of such migration is considered briefly. The main body of the article provides a more detailed exploration of the motivational factors that influence retired EU migrants' decisions to relocate. Using qualitative data, some important factors that precipitate movement are considered. Specific attention is given to the impact that concerns about access to welfare - particularly health, care and pensions systems - may have on older citizens' movement within Europe. (RH).
