Annotation | Bracknell Forest is one of six unitary authorities formed in April 1998 from the former Berkshire County. This report provides an objective assessment of how well local people are served by their social services. Compared to similar authorities, Bracknell Forest has an above average number of older people admitted to residential and nursing home care. The Authority aims to give higher priority to carers' needs, but has a long way to go in meeting them. Bracknell Assessment and Reablement Team (BART), a pilot co-ordinating health and social care for older people recovering from illness, is cited as an example of good practice. Key themes recommended for future action include: agreeing strategic priorities for social care, defined in terms of improved outcomes for users and carers; problems of staff recruitment and retention; listening to users and carers and involving them appropriately in every process; and establishing partnerships with other commissioning and service-providing agencies.
