AnnotationPsychopathology and functional impairment are common in dementia, and contribute to caregiver distress and admission to long-term care. However, more detailed comparative data about psychopathology and functional impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementia sub-types are needed for the development of effective long-term management and treatment interventions. The purpose of this study was to compare groups of patients with AD, ischaemic vascular dementia (IVD), or AD/IVD with regard to: severity of cognitive impairment; severity of functional impairment; prevalence of psychiatric symptoms; and impact of psychiatric symptoms on functional and cognitive impairment.
