Therapy use and discharge outcomes for elderly nursing home residents | Author(s) | Greg Arling, Arthur R Williams, Donna Kopp |
Journal title | The Gerontologist, vol 40, no 5, October 2000 |
Pages | pp 587-595 |
Keywords | Residents [care homes] ; Nursing homes ; Rehabilitation ; Discharge ; United States of America. |
Annotation | The study comprised 1419 over 60s post-acute care nursing home admissions in South Dakota meeting criteria for rehabilitation. Receipt of therapies was related significantly to age (younger), Medicare coverage, hip fracture or stroke diagnosis, absence of cancer diagnosis, and resident or staff expectations for functional improvement. Therapy use was related positively to community discharge and negatively to mortality, when controlling for covariates such as age, marital status, payment source, functional status, cognitive status, and major diagnoses. Community discharge was also positively related to the home's volume of therapy provision and percentage of Medicare-covered stays. (RH). |
