Annotation | Pension provision in Britain is examined, one year before the launch of stakeholder pensions. The report is based on analysis of responses to questions in the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Omnibus Survey for March 2000. Some 1700 respondents (mainly of working age) were asked about their current pension provision and the types of savings they had. They were also asked about their attitudes towards different types of pensions, planning for retirement, and confidence in both the state and private pensions. Although people were broadly confident about the level of their retirement income, this confidence diminished for those on lower incomes, those not currently contributing to a non-state pension, and those nearing retirement age when they are likely to have the best idea of what retirement income might be. A final chapter focuses on people who are retired. More than half currently received income from an occupational or personal pension, and were most likely to have the highest incomes in retirement. Those with poorer pension provision mirror those noted in the working population, but with women and part-timers particularly affected. (RH). |
