Carers [and the family] | Author(s) | Saul Becker |
Journal title | Research Matters : a digest of research in the social services, no 9, April-October 2000 |
Pages | pp 22-26 |
Keywords | Informal care ; Family care ; Children [offspring] as carers ; The Family ; Needs [elderly] ; Literature reviews. |
Annotation | The whole family is the focus of the three pieces of research reviewed. The in-depth studies give a detailed picture of the experiences and aspirations of family members - carers and non-carers alike. Only one of the studies is concerned specifically with caring for older people: "We're in this together: conversations with families in caring relationships" (Carers National Association, 1999). That report identifies three kinds of caring relationships: parents caring for a disabled child; husbands, wives or partners caring for the other partner; and adult sons and daughters caring for an ageing, frail parent. The review points to a need for an all-round approach to assessing, reviewing and meeting carers' support needs. (RH). |
