Annotation | The cross-currents of expectation running between the generations are explored in the first article. What are our obligations in youth and middle age - legal, moral, spiritual - towards older people in general and our own relatives in particular? And what are their continuing obligations towards their children or grandchildren? Both the nature of social solidarity and what it means for older people in later life require new interpretations, not least the meaning of retirement. Three further articles consider the empowerment of older people, the role of the church and other organisations in promoting intergenerational support. (RH). |
