Annotation | An ageing population is seen as one of Spain's main future problems, and older Spanish people have repeatedly expressed that health is their main problem. Almost 100% of the Spanish population has the right to free lifetime comprehensive health care from its National Health System. This article outlines the nature of provision; the role of informal or family care for older people; education of geriatricians; and geriatric care. While politicians are reluctant to develop geriatric medicine, local authorities who are closer to social problems are developing appropriate social care services. (RH). |
