Annotation | The primary care setting is important in the prevention of late life suicide. The circumstances of 42 suicides aged 60 and over who had visited a primary care provider within 30 days of death were compared with 196 other over 60s from group practices in Monroe County, NY. Completed suicides had more depressive illness, physical illness and functional limitations than controls, and were more likely to be prescribed antidepressants. However, physical health, overall function and treatments did not differ between the two groups. Primary care providers should be well-prepared to diagnose and treat depression in their older patients. (RH). |
