AnnotationA longitudinal pilot survey in St Louis, Missouri of older drivers (mean age 77) with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) and a non-demented group found that those with mild or very mild DAT and continued to drive seemed to have crash rates similar to those of the controls. Drivers with DAT had trends toward more at-fault accidents, accidents with injuries, and accidents in which the officer on the scene cited failure to give way. There may be significant differences between the causes and consequences of crashes involving drivers with DAT when compared with cognitively intact age-matched controls, but none were found in this pilot study.
