Annotation | The Joint Review found that people in Newham are not consistently well served by their Social Services Department (SSD). Although many services have improved over recent years, vulnerable people still find it difficult to access the help they need. For older people, Best Value has given momentum to service changes, but further work is needed to develop rehabilitation, community-based alternatives to residential care, and services for specific minority ethnic groups. Examples of good practice include: an informal carers' scheme; and the establishment of Newham Advocacy Consortium, to develop and maintain standards, and provide accredited training. Priorities for action recommended by the Joint Review include: focus on the core business - users' and carers' needs; and improve and speed up access to specialist services. (RH). |
