AnnotationNursing homes may be a particularly good setting for outbreaks of influenza. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate some aspects of institutionalised older people's nutrition in relation to their response to influenza vaccination. Of 23 patients vaccinated in this study, 11 were responsive. Nutritional parameters such as haemoglobin, haematocrit, total protein, iron and vitamin E levels, as well as the DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) level and the cellular immune response were significantly lower in the non-responsive group as compared with the responsive group. Thus, they might be associated with subjects' influenza vaccine responsiveness. These results will help design intervention studies for improving the immune response, by achieving an optimal nutritional status, particularly for frail older populations, that could have a great public health impact.
