Annotation | After they had performed each of a series of activities, 40 older people (ages 57-87 years) and 40 young people (ages 19-26 years) were asked to rate the difficulty of the activity. Recall of the activities was later tested. Older people tended to remember those activities they perceived to be less difficult, whereas the younger group tended to remember those activities they perceived as more difficult. Thus, when more cognitive effort was required to perform an activity, older people tended to have difficulty later remembering the activity. Difficult activities are hypothesised to tax limited processing resources and to induce anxiety in older people, preventing successful encoding. (RH). |
