AnnotationData concerning Medicaid residents of more than 500 nursing homes in Massachusetts was used to compile risk-adjusted performance scores based on four health outcomes and five quality indicators. Health outcome measures were: survival rate; activities of daily living (ADL) functional status; behavioural or cognitive status; and incontinence. Quality indicators were: decubitis ulcers; restraint use; contractures; accidents; and weight change. Over a 3-year period, intercorrelations between the nine measures were relatively low and not uniformly positive. For most outcomes, longitudinal analyses revealed only modest correlations between a nursing home's performance score from one time period to the next. Relatively few homes exhibited consistently superior or inferior performance over time. (RH).
