Annotation | International retirement migration (IRM) lies at the intersection of three major research areas: migration studies, tourism and social gerontology. This book is the first to analyse the phenomenon of IRM, and to examine the conceptual and policy contexts of this relatively new but popular form of transnational mobility. The Costa del Sol, the Algarve, Tuscany and Malta attract increasing numbers of retirees each year, especially from the UK and North America. The roles of international tourism and living abroad earlier in life in forming ambitions to retire abroad and the positive consequences of such moves are demonstrated. Issues of integration, language as a social barrier, and the creation and maintenance of networks of friends and family are explored, as are the challenges of providing health and welfare services for an ageing population. The research for this study was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) during 1995-1997. (RH). |
