Annotation | This 1998 edition of "British social attitudes" survey results presents a first look at grandparenting in modern Britain, laying the foundations for future detailed analysis of changing roles and relationships. The authors examine whether links between grandparents and grandchildren are indeed as weak as some commentators suggest. They focus is on the relationship between the age of both grandchild and grandparent, and patterns of grandparenting and attitudes towards it. Three issues critically relating to modern grandparenting are critically examined: its role during family breakdown; its role as a provider of childcare; and the importance of matriliny (family descent traced through the female line). The high level of satisfaction in the role experienced by most grandparents suggests that more could be done to encourage greater practical support for parents by them. The data indicate that it is internal family processes, rather than external factors in the world of work, which influence how much support grandparents give and the feelings which they have about it.
