Annotation | This study uses a sample population of 6,433 older workers (aged 51-61) from the 1992 US Health and Retirement Study, to estimate an empirical model of leisure exercise activity. Alternative theories relating work and leisure attitudes relevant for understanding the exercise behaviour of older workers are tested empirically. Responses are grouped into white-collar and blue-collar worker categories, and analysed to test whether self-reported levels of regular physical activity are associated with the physical demands and stress associated with an individual's job. The empirical results are most supportive of the "generalization" theory, and illustrate the complexity of relationships between work and leisure physical activity. (KJ/RH). |
