AnnotationThe reshaping of the age pyramid - the age shift - is a global phenomenon, affecting all developed nations and an increasing number of developing countries. The Ageing Population Panel was asked to look at the social and economic impacts of the change to the UK's population profile, and to assess their implications for business, work and leisure. The Panel's brief within the Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) Foresight Programme was to look at the entire population - not just older people - and to consider the effects of demographic change. This report is based on responses to discussion papers produced by the Panel's five Taskforces on: Labour, Leisure and Learning; Finance; Healthcare and the Older Person; Design for Living; and Applications of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). It makes recommendations on helping businesses to meet the age shift, and on planning for an ageing society. The Panel also notes that some progress should be made on age discrimination issues with the European Union (EU) Directive on Equal Opportunities (October 2000) and the Government's review of its Voluntary Code of Practice on Age Diversity in Employment in 2001. (RH).
