Annotation | Increasing life expectancies in the ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) Region have contributed to significant increases in the proportion of older people in the population. This report on Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka is part of an ESCAP project, "Asia's population future: implications for the family and the elderly", funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and arising from the need to tackle older people's problems. The studies for each country examine: family structure; older people's status; kin availability and living arrangements; support exchanges; attitude on specific issues and potential for organising support groups; and care-givers. Recommendations of the Regional Seminar on the Family and the Elderly, held at Bangkok in October 1998 are outlined. (RH). |
