AnnotationDespite a high prevalence of malnutrition in frail older American patients, standardised nutritional assessment has not been part of the comprehensive geriatric assessment. This study of 105 geriatric unit patients and 50 older people living in the community used the following evaluations: Mini-Nutritional Assessment test (MNA); functional evaluation (Mini-Mental State - MMS); activities of daily living (ADLs); and a comprehensive nutritional assessment, including anthropometry, laboratory indices, and evaluation of dietary intake. MNA scores were significantly correlated to nutritional intake. The MNA thus permits rapid nutritional evaluation of frail older people at risk of malnutrition. (RH).
