AnnotationThe protective effect of moderate alcohol consumption has been well-documented. The present study of data from the Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study (EHLS) and the Beaver Dam Eye Study (BDES). More than 3,500 residents of Beaver Dam, WI aged 43 to 87 in 1987-88 had their hearing thresholds measured, along with information regarding alcohol consumption and other health and lifestyle factors. There is evidence of a modest protective association of alcohol consumption and hearing loss in these cross-sectional data. This finding is in agreement with a small body of evidence suggesting that hearing loss is not an inevitable component of the ageing process. (RH).
