Annotation9 guidelines and consensus statements on diagnosing dementia with US or international scope found in a MEDLINE search are reviewed. Although there is unanimity on assessing the presenting problem, they differ in content, recommendations, and development methodology. Guideline publishers are: National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke, and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association (NINCDS-ADRDA, 1984); US National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference Statement (NIH, 1987); Swedish consensus on dementia diseases (1994); American Academy of Neurology (AAN, 1994); the US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR, 1996); US Department of Veteran Affairs (VA, 1997); Consensus statement of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, Alzheimer's Association, and American Geriatrics Society (AAGP, 1997); Canadian Consensus Conference on Dementia (CAN, 1999); and the American Medical Association (AMA, 1999).
