AnnotationA qualitative study using semi-structured interviews explored 7 individuals' perspectives of their hospital self-care instruction and their ability to perform self-care at home. Secondary themes emerging from the study include: individuals' self-care experiences in the hospital; their ability to perform self-care at home; and the role of motivation in their ability to perform self-care. These were directly related to and supported the primary theme: their loss of place in life following hospitalisation. The findings provide the insight needed regarding whether the manner in which self-care is taught in the hospital generalises and affects individuals' ability to perform self-care at home. (RH).
