Annotation | The hypothesis was tested that impairment in the ability to take medication independently predicts early functional decline. A 12-month prospective cohort study of over 80s was performed at two continuing care retirement homes using the Drug Regimen Unassisted Grading Scale (DRUGS), which assesses identification, access, dosage and timing of medication. The DRUGS tool may predict functional decline in highly functioning older people, and the likelihood of admission to assisted living communities or nursing homes during the 12 month assessment period.
