AnnotationRecent data and policy statements on over 45s employment in the UK and Australia were analysed, supplemented by findings from interviews with government and industry leaders in the UK in October/November 1998. As in other countries, population ageing, a long-term decline in activity rates and skills among mature age workers and discrimination against them are important policy issues in both Australia and the UK. A major policy difference is the use of anti-discrimination and related legislation in Australia, whereas the UK relies on education and codes of practice. Sustained awareness-raising is required, together with an evaluation of the longer term impact of employment policies. Employee involvement is low; and systematic approaches are needed to identify good practice by employers toward older people in both countries. A comprehensive approach - taking into account industry, occupational, locational and gender differentials - is crucial. (RH).
