Annotation | Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of being human that continues throughout life, yet, despite increasing evidence to support this, western society has perpetuated myths and stereotypes that suggest older people are not interested in sexual expression, or even that they believe it is inappropriate. This monograph aims to explore the perspectives of older people. Drawing on gerontological, psychosocial and clinical literature, it acknowledges the vastness of the subject area and focuses on those aspects that appear to be least commonly debated in nursing papers. It discusses the concept of sexuality and how this may change in later life. It reviews the effects of normal age-related changes, illness or disability on the expression of sexuality by older people, and offers ideas on how older people can adapt to changes in their bodies and life circumstances. It also offers a critique on currently available research and a bibliography of resources that can help inform those working with older people. Finally, it raises key issues that challenge nurses working with older people, and aims to offer constructive suggestions on how the difficult areas of sexual expression can be tackled. (RH). |
